Supply List:

  • Pipe-cleaner or Wire
  • 6- Little Wood Beads (Red or White)
  • 2 -Jingle Bells (Small Red)
  • 7 – Wooden Spools
  • 1 – Holly Berry Embellishment (found at Hobby Lobby)
  • 1 – Holiday Ribbon
  • A large spool of Red & White Baker’s Twine
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

There’s something magical about handmade ornaments. They aren’t just decorations – they’re keepsakes that hold memories year after year! Today, we’re creating a simple ornament that can brighten any tree or be used as a thoughtful embellishment for holiday gifts. These ornaments are also perfect as stocking stuffers, offering your loved ones a keepsake they’ll enjoy for years to come. Crafting ornaments like these is a great way to make your gifts stand out with that “extra little something.”

Preparing the Spools for Your Ornament

Start by wrapping each wooden spool with baker’s twine. Add a dab of hot glue to secure the twine at the beginning, wrap it tightly around the spool, and glue the end to hold it in place. Repeat this for all seven spools. Cut any excess twine and add a small drop of glue to prevent fraying. If you’re using fabric strips or ribbon instead of twine, follow the same process.

Assembling Your Candy Cane Ornament

Take a pipe cleaner and thread it through the top of a jingle bell, twisting it off a few times to secure it and cutting off the excess. Next, thread the wrapped spools onto your pipe cleaner or wire, alternating them with red beads. Add another jingle bell on the end, twisting it a few times and trimming the excess again. Shape the pipe cleaner into a candy cane shape.

Cut a piece of baker’s twine and thread it between a bead and a spool on your ornament. Tie a secure knot to hold it in place. Then, bring the two ends of the twine together and create a slipknot to form a loop for hanging your ornament. To finish, grab a ribbon from your stash and craft a simple bow. Use a small piece of baker’s twine to tie off the center of the bow. Attach the bow to the middle of the candy cane with a dab of hot glue. For a festive touch, take a Holly Berry Embellishment (available at Hobby Lobby) and hot glue it to the center of the bow.

Making these candy cane spool ornaments is such a fun and simple way to add a handmade touch to your holiday decorations. They’re easy to customize and bring a charming, festive vibe to your tree or gift wrap.
