Creating Your Mini Fabric Flag

Gather your fabric and felt pieces – you will need 4×6 inch pieces and 3×2.5 inch pieces. We’ll be using the felt to back the fabric to create a more sturdy flag. I am gluing a piece of white felt to the back of my America the Beautiful piece of fabric. I’ll also add a little bit of hot glue along the sides of the rectangle to make sure it stays together. If you’re more of a stitcher, you can also hand-stitch your felt and fabric together too (just make sure not to hand-stitch through hot glue). I’m also going to go around the outer edge and pull out some threads to create a frayed edge.

Next, I’ll glue my floral fabric square into the upper left corner of my flag. I’ll come back in again with my hot glue gun and run some along the edges. I’ll also create the frayed look around the edge of this square too.

Now, we’ll add our little skewer. Flip your flag over and run two lines of hot glue along the edge where you will be adding the stick. Place your skewer into the second line of glue and then wrap the fabric around the skewer. Add more hot glue onto the stick and wrap it even further.

Adding Embellishments to Your Fabric Flag

You could literally just leave your mini fabric flags just the way they are and they would be adorable. However, if you would like to get creative and add a little something to your flags, you can add tons of embellishments.

You can tie some baker’s twine, jute, or ribbon around your skewer to add a little bow to your mini flag. I also have a fabric with a patriotic mason jar pattern. I’ll cut out some of my mason jars and add those to one of my flags. You can cut a heart out of your felt and add that to your flag. Add some Stickles to your heart and you have a cute little embellishment!

You can also take some felt and add a stitched shape like a star. I’m going to use a square of red felt and then hand-stitch a star with some white thread. I’ll cut out the star and add it to one of my flags too!

The options are endless with these cute mini fabric flags! Use what you have in your stash and embellish them any way that you would like. These are super quick to put together and will look great in your home, in flower arrangements, in flower pots on your patio, and more!

If you had fun making these, be sure to join my upcoming workshop, Patriotic Stitched Star on May 26th, 27th, and 28th at 7 pm CST! I’ll show you how to create an art piece in three easy steps – from the fabric placement to freestyle hand-stitching to those last finishing touches.

And, the doors to my Fabric Fan Club are opening soon! The Fabric Fan Club is a fab-ulous community where creatives like YOU can learn and be inspired to create awesome projects while learning a wide variety of fabric crafting and stitching techniques! Get on the waitlist to be notified first!
